I went through my clothes closet yesterday. If you've been reading this blog long, you may remember that, by switching from long-time junk food vegetarian to vegan, I lost a lot of weight last year - about 70 pounds, or so. I'm still working on it, but I'm darn close to where I want to be.
Thursday, hubby and I cleaned out the garage. Lo and behold, it has a floor! As surprising as that discovery was, the two boxes of old clothing I stumbled upon were even more so. One box had several t-shirts and dresses from when I was a teenager. And, by golly, they fit! The next box was filled with maternity clothes and nursing bras from when I was pregnant with K. Goody! We've been thinking of trying to conceive again, and these will be a huge help! So, yesterday, I washed everything up and took it to my closet, but (oh, you could see this coming, couldn't you?) there wasn't really any room to hang it.
Standing there, dumbfounded, I realized I'll probably never again wear half of what was hanging on the rods. Really, 95% of it was too big (yay!), but without money for a new wardrobe, I've got to make do with giant shirts until ... I don't know ... some point in the future when we've got money to spend, I guess. So, I culled ruthlessly, keeping the things that didn't make me look like a baggy, saggy clown and piling the rest into a laundry basket.
Now, I've got to figure out what to do with them. Decent plus-sized clothing is difficult to come by. Believe me, I know. Unless you love shirts with cute little kitty cats or Pooh Bear, or you just adore animal prints, plus sized clothing is a joke. So, I know someone out there will appreciate these.
When I was 13, I volunteered for a place called "County Welfare" that gave free clothing to people in need. Not surprisingly, it's defunct now, and unfortunately, I can't find anything like it around here.... I could take them to the local Goodwill, but they charge so much for clothing, the people who need clothes can't afford to buy them ($8 for a pair of jeans when they have row upon row upon row of jeans... really?). Instead, I was thinking about offering them on Freecycle or Craigslist.
So, that's one of my projects for today. Unless someone has a better idea....

What about calling around the local houses of worship? They may have a connection with social service agencies that serve the poor. Or how about a homeless or battered women's shelter? I'm sure they could use good clothes to give out. Of course, there's always Freecycle and Craigslist, but it sounds like you'd rather give these items to a good cause first. I agree that's a great first choice.

YOu could also possibly repurpose some of them into clothes that fit :) if you have some basic sewing skills or a friend who could help?
I was also going to suggest some sewing....I've seen tutorials on line for recycling old clothing and sewing "new" shirts, etc.... mostly they are for kids, but, the same principals still apply right? Just bigger for an adult size....
